Ink that never dries.

Sumi Atelier draws identities by hand, on paper, with one brush. Then we set them in code. Scroll, and the camera moves in on the sheet we are working on today.

01 · The ground0 to 3 s

We start on a bare sheet.

Kozo paper from the Echizen mills, cut to 60 cm. The left third stays empty on every sheet. That is where your name will sit.

02 · The pool3 to 7 s

The ink decides the edge.

We load the brush, set it down and lift it. The fibres do the rest. Nothing is traced, nothing is cleaned up in software, and the feathered edge you see on the sign is the one on the paper.

03 · The seal7 to 10 s

Then one square of vermilion.

Every mark ends with a seal carved for the client in pear wood. It is the only colour we add. The rest is black, paper and the time it took to dry.

Selected marks, 2022 to 2026.

Move the cursor across the sheet and it leaves a wash. Rest it and the pool spreads. Choose a project and its plate bleeds in from where you chose it.

Send us a name. We send back a sheet.

We take 4 identity commissions a year, each about 11 weeks from the first sheet to the carved seal. The next opening is March 2027.

Weeks 1 to 3
Sheets. You get the 12 we kept, by post, on the paper they were drawn on.
Weeks 4 to 8
One mark, scanned at 1200 dpi and drawn again as vector, edge for edge.
Weeks 9 to 11
The system: type, the seal, signs and the files your developer needs.
