It starts closed and heavy.
A bakawali bud hangs for 14 days, then opens in a single night. We cut ours at 18:00, the hour the tips begin to lift, and carry them in by hand.

Flowers that keep night hours.

Then the petals let go.
At full open each flower is the width of a hand. The scent peaks just before midnight: jasmine first, then something green underneath. You can smell the shop from the corner.

Whatever is left at closing goes to the stalls on Jalan Telawi for the night market. Nothing waits in a fridge for tomorrow, because tomorrow it will not open again.

A bakawali stays open for about 6 hours. The night run gets it to you in under 40 minutes, standing upright in a lidded box with the vase water already in.
