Every part
on one line

The ML-47 is built to come apart along a single axis. Scroll, and it does: 47 components lifted in the order a watchmaker would lift them, each named as it lets go.

The case lets go first

01 · Case and crown6 parts

Brushed steel, 39 mm across and 10.4 mm tall. The crown runs on a sealed tube, so the movement slides out the back without a single tool touching the dial.

Four wheels, one direction

02 · Going train11 parts

Centre, third, fourth and escape wheels pass the mainspring's pull down the line, each a little faster than the last. Spokes are cut by wire, then bevelled by hand.

72 hours in one drum

03 · Barrel9 parts

The largest wheel on the line. Inside it, 52 cm of mainspring wound flat. The cover is flame-finished so you can tell it from the train at a glance.

Sapphire, domed both ways

04 · Crystal and dial7 parts

The crystal curves on both faces and is coated on the inside only, so a scratched outside never clouds the view. The dial sits on two feet and three hands.

05 · Balance and bridges14 parts

The camera ends where the watch begins: a gold balance wheel on a ruby jewel, beating 8 times a second. It is the last part out and the first part checked.

06 · The line47 of 47

Every ML-47 is taken down along this line twice before it leaves Le Locle: once to finish, once to check. Then it is closed for 5 years.

A watch is easier to trust once you have seen it in pieces.

The ledger, in order of removal

Five groups, read left to right along the line. The service manual follows the same order, so the next watchmaker opens it the way the first one closed it.
