Walk the valley as it was measured.

Hraunsgil is a columnar basalt valley, scanned along one 1,200 m line from 4 stations. The page opens on the scan. Scroll, and it gives way to the photograph as you walk the line to the prism.

Hraunsgil, line A, surveyed 12 to 15 September 2026

Station 01 · Valley mouth12 Sep 2026

The line starts where the scree stops.

The first set-up stands on the valley floor, 40 m in from the road end. From here the scanner sees both walls and 600 m of gravel in one 6 minute sweep.

Station 02 · The colonnade13 Sep 2026

1,412 columns, each one counted.

The south wall is one lava flow that cracked into columns as it cooled. The scan resolves every joint wider than 4 mm, so each column is measured, not guessed.

Station 03 · Joint set14 Sep 2026

Six sides, most of the time.

Sorted by edge count, most column tops are hexagons. Low sun from the east at 07:40 puts a shadow in every joint, so the photographs were all taken in that half hour.

Station 04 · The prism15 Sep 2026

One orange tripod holds the survey still.

A glass prism on a fixed column top. Every set-up shoots it first, so the 4 scans lock to one point within 3 mm. It stayed up until the last sweep.
